SOLAR POWER SAVES MONEY FOR FAMILIES

COMPTON, CA
– In an effort to create homes that sustain the people who live in them as well as the surrounding environment, Community Dynamics provided architecturally integrated photovoltaic roof tiles on 13 of the 50 homes at Central Park Estates.

Central Park Estates is the first housing subdivision in the United States to feature this cutting-edge technology, which is particularly remarkable because the subdivision caters to lower and moderate income families. The roof tiles significantly cut utility bills for each of the households, increasing the benefits of living in the affordable housing development by creating greater cash flow every month.

Photovoltaic roof tiles harness the energy from the sun and convert it into electricity. Because, more often than not, the sun generates more energy than a household can use, the extra energy is channeled into California Edison's power grid and is credited towards the household's account. At night, the power grid supplies the home with electricity.

Community Dynamics partnered with Enertron, a Los Altos based energy consulting firm to secure a $200,000 grant from the California Energy Commission and a $100,000 grant from the South Coast Air Quality Management District in order to subsidize the cost of the roof tiles.

On April 18, 1999, the photovoltaic roof tiles at the Central Park Estates homes were featured on the front page of the Los Angeles Times Real Estate section, and were showcased as a compelling alternative to traditional fuel sources.

Although solar power is still far from mainstream, its inclusion in a housing subdivision is a first step in making it more widely available.

Community Dynamics is dedicated to providing the best quality homes for families who need them the most, as well as sustainable building practices.
